Sinking Concrete? Why You Should Replace Your Concrete

Replacing Your Sunken Concrete

Do you have cracking, broken, or sinking concrete such as a driveway, patio, garage, or shed? This happens because the dirt and ground underneath the concrete have settled and in turn sunk down causing the concrete to sit on uneven ground. When this happens, concrete will crack or break from lack of support. Mud jacking is a short-term fix that will ultimately have to be replaced at some point anyway. Replacing concrete will fix the underlying issues, allowing the concrete to last longer and look better than repairing with mud jacking.

What is Mud Jacking?

Mud jacking is the process of pumping “mud” (a combination of limestone, concrete, sand, and water) into 1.25” holes drilled through the concrete. Mud jacking will take longer to cure since the mixture uses water in the solution that will have to cure before ready for use. This method also increases weight significantly and will wear down from weather and decay over time. Although mud jacking is a cheaper quick-fix solution, you will find yourself needing to repeat this process until the area needs to be replaced. On average the lifespan of lifted concrete is 3-5 years until the area needs to be replaced.

What is Polyurethane Foam Jacking

Poly jacking is a similar process to mud jacking but is a slightly different process. Poly jacking uses 3/8” holes to fill the area under a concrete slab to stabilize and level the concrete. Poly jacking also uses a different material that will be used to lift the sunken concrete. This process uses high-density foam to push the concrete slab back up and will cure faster than mud jacking. The downfall is that it costs quite a bit more and it is not a guaranteed permanent fix.

What It Comes Down To

Mud jacking or poly jacking are temporary solutions that will need attention down the line. These fixes leave the underlying issues unresolved and will end up causing more headaches and cost you more over time. Replacing your concrete can fix those underlying issues and last much longer than any temporary fix. Repeated use of mud jacking or poly jacking will increasingly become harder as you have to get through that hard layer that was put in the previous time. For a better look and a better
